Commissioning is often described as the final project phase, but the ability to commission a biomethane plant is created much earlier. System boundaries, access, drains, vents, instruments, interlocks and test points all originate in design.
Plan turnover by system
Break the plant into systems that can be completed, inspected, tested and transferred in a safe sequence. Mechanical completion records, punch items and energisation controls should follow the same system structure used by commissioning.
Design for testability
Provide practical isolation, flushing and sampling points; temporary connections where needed; instrument ranges suitable for start-up; and control modes that allow individual equipment checks before fully automatic operation.
Separate cold tests from biological start-up
Water runs, motor checks, loop tests and control-sequence verification should be substantially complete before inoculation and feed introduction. Biological loading can then increase gradually against defined process-health criteria.
Every unresolved construction interface becomes a commissioning problem at the most expensive time to fix it.
Operator training, manuals, spares and laboratory routines should also be ready before hot commissioning. A structured handover protects the transition from project team to stable plant operation.
